Haffner Press Newsletter – December 28, 2016 – Fredric Brown Updates!!

• • FREDRIC BROWN UPDATE • •

We hope each of you and your families are having a happy and safe Holiday Season. Here at the Secret Moon Base, we are still working on making the best books we can of your favorite writers. This time ’round, we have updates on the long-gestating first two volumes of the FREDRIC BROWN MYSTERY LIBRARY. So, getting to it . . .
The first volume, MURDER DRAWS A CROWD was given to a printer in August 2015 and they alerted us on December 7th that finished copies were available for pick-up. As detailed in previous newsletters, the binding method used to make the cloth-covered case fit the page-block matched no book we’ve ever seen, let alone published. This binding method also forced the spine of the dustjacket to wrap onto the back of the book. When we were informed that the entire inventory was bound in this manner, we rejected the whole lot. Despite a lengthy dialogue, this printer refused to make any corrections let alone mount a reprinting. One a brighter note, bringing MURDER DRAWS A CROWD up to date for a different printer requires only minor changes (mostly updating copyright notices from 2015 to 2017).For the second volume, DEATH IN THE DARK, layout & design are complete, along with the introduction, proofreading, copyright notices, etc. Aside from a new cover image, the largest bit of work remaining involves the interior illustrations. These illustrations are taken from the original magazine publications (requiring more than four years of research and acquisition!) and every single one of them will undergo a painstaking (and back-breaking!) digital clean-up to present them in the best light. FYI, we’re still looking for a logo for the magazine The Michigan Well Driller.

Based on the beautiful job done by a different (and much more reliable) printer on our recent Henry Kuttner book, THE WATCHER AT THE DOOR: THE EARLY KUTTNER, VOLUME TWO, the plan is to send both
MURDER DRAWS A CROWD and DEATH IN THE DARK to this superior vendor in 1st Quarter 2017. We’ll share more news and we have it, and thanks for hanging with us on these titles; we hope you feel the delay was worth the wait.Meanwhile, you can read one of Fredric Brown’s first-published stories, “Blood of the Dragon” (from

Variety Detective Magazine Feb. 39) HERE:

CHIEF OF POLICE Walworth smacked the top of his desk with his hand so hard that the impact sounded like a revolver shot. “I tell you, ‘Deadpan,’ we’ve got to get those counterfeiters soon, damn soon, or the commissioner will have me out on the sidewalk. And the newspapers are howling like banshees!”
His ace detective and closest friend, seated across the desk from him, replied calmly, placatingly: “We’ve been doing everything we can, Phil. After all—”
“We know the stuff’s being made right in or near this very town. Whenever a green-goods dealer or pusher gets picked up anywhere in the state

BEYOND MARS — Signed Edition
Written by Jack Williamson
Artwork by Lee Elias
Edited & Designed by Dean Mullaney
Introduction by Bruce Canwell
Oversized 9.6″ x 12.1″ full color hardcover, 160 pp
$55.00 W/FREE SHIPPING*

Drawn from the same setting of Jack Williamson‘s novels SEETEE SHIP and SEETEE SHOCK, BEYOND MARS
takes place 200 years in the future, when a new force—paragravity—has enabled men to live and breathe on the asteroids. The strip stars Mike Flint, a spatial engineer who lives on Brooklyn Rock, an asteroid “beyond Mars.” With Sam, his green-skinned metallic partner from Venus, Flint gets involved in a series of lighthearted adventures, battling space pirates, teaming up with beautiful and strong-minded women, and dealing with addicts of the mysterious drug called “star dust.”
The restored color is outstanding and the artwork is creative and imaginative. Bruce Canwell contributes a wonderful introduction, putting this in the context of early 1950s science fiction. The book also includes original art by Lee Elias on other features like Black Cat, Terry & the Pirates and Tommy Tomorrow.
Editor Dean Mullaney of IDW / Library of America Comics was nominated for an Eisner Award for his assemblage of this vintage 1950s Sunday newspaper strip.

**SPECIAL SIGNED EDITION:
This is book is an essential addition to your library, but the first installment (February 17, 1952) of the strip was unintentionally left out. REVIEWS FOR BEYOND MARS

“…THIS IS THE BEST REPRINT BOOK OF AN OLD NEWSPAPER STRIP I’VE EVER SEEN!!! …The colors are gorgeous, the art is sharp and crisp, and the quality of the book is top notch! Bruce Canwell’s intro is informative and to the point. I’m afraid it can’t get any better than this, friends…It’s really stunning, and though I usually grumble when it comes to the restorations of old newspaper strips, this is the best ever! Highly recommended, and a sure winner!” —Diego C.“Rethidenth of Brooklyn Rock are thure to love thith book. I am ethpecially fond of the green metal-eating worm. For a Venusian, he’s VERY attractive!  —Sam

“…this is a great collection of stories featuring that amazing era when space travel seemed right around the corner. Equal parts Hardy Boys (with only one boy) and Flash Gordon…The main reason to buy this is the art by Lee Elias, a true master who seldom got the respect he deserved. Best of all, if you’re like me and you find reading comic strip collections difficult because they are so repetitive and the pacing slow, these are collected Sunday strips, so each one is a full page of stunning art and the story moves along at a relatively brisk pace, you’d think you’re reading a graphic novel rather than a comic strip collection.” —IMHO T.

“…This is the BEYOND MARS I’ve been waiting for! The black & white reprints in the 80s were fine, but here is all the color and reproduced at full-size! Also, VERY happy to see that this signed edition includes the missing first weekly installment.” —Mojo M.

“…Art is Great. The story certainly has that 1950′s Space Adventure feel..” —George G.

“…I highly recommend it to lovers of classic science fiction and sequential art. Beyond Mars is what happens when two masters in their respective fields join forces to create a work of art. It is, simply put, beyond awesome.” —Chad Derdowski, cinemasentries.com

Before his marriage to (and subsequent collaborations with) Catherine L. Moore, Henry Kuttner was a frequent contributor to the pulp magazines that specialized in the weird, supernatural, horror, and science fiction genre. Beginning in 1936, with the minor classic “The Graveyard Rats,” Kuttner launched a steady stream of short stories aimed at Weird Tales, Strange Stories, Thrilling Mystery, and others.
Writing for Weird Tales brought Kuttner into direct correspondence with that magazine’s premier contributor. H. P. Lovecraft. Kuttner set several stories in Lovecraft’s “Cthulhu Mythos” and two are presented in THE WATCHER AT THE DOOR: “Hydra” and “The Hunt.”
At this point in his still-young career, Kuttner had cracked the science fiction market and was steadily publishing in Thrilling Wonder Stories, Fantastic Adventures, Science Fiction, and made his first sale to the new prestigious fantasy magazine, Unknown.
In the course of writing the stories collected in this volume, Kuttner married Catherine Lucille Moore on June 7, 1940 (in New York with artist Virgil Finlay as Best Man).
THE WATCHER AT THE DOOR is the second volume in a three-volume “Early Kuttner” set collecting many of Kuttner’s earliest stories, most of which have never been reprinted.

“MAN’S CONQUEST OF SPACE or UPSIDE-DOWN IN TIME”
A New Unpublished Story by
HENRY KUTTNER

Now, with the upcoming release of THE WATCHER AT THE DOOR: THE EARLY KUTTNER, VOLUME TWO, we are pleased as pandas (!) to announce we have discovered ANOTHER unpublished Henry Kuttner story!
MAN’S CONQUEST OF SPACE or UPSIDE-DOWN IN TIMEis an early gag-story (featuring pandas) supposedly written for the fanzines of the 1930s. It likely predates Kuttner’s first professional sale in 1936.

THE WATCHER AT THE DOOR: THE EARLY KUTTNER, VOLUME TWO.We’re printing a limited quantity of this new Kuttner story, so Do. Not. Delay. This also means more good news:

Haffner Press Newsletter – October 19, 2016

In This Issue: October 19, 2016
  Hey everybody.
A very somber newsletter this time around. In the world of entertainment, 2016 has seen far too many of our most talented performers leave us. Recently, several folks who played a large part with Haffner Press have passed away. We pay tribute to these gentlemen, and hope that you find time to learn more about these men and their contributions to the genre that we all love.
                                      —Stephen Haffner

•  David A. Kyle(1919 – 2016)
•  Robert Weinberg(1942- 2016)
•  Barry Levin(1946 – 2016)
•  Ed Gorman (1941 – 2016)

David A. Kyle (1919-2016)

Certainly not by his own choice, but David A. Kyle was the unofficial godfather of Haffner Press. Full details are found in this interview from 2002 HERE. Suffice to say, without David Kyle, you wouldn’t be reading this newsletter.
Kyle was one of the early SF fans in the 1930s, attended the first Worldcon in 1939, and was a member of the legendary group, The Futurians.
Following service in World War II, Kyle managed a New York radio station. In 1948, with Martin Greenberg, Kyle founded Gnome Press in 1948, ultimately publishing published dozens of volumes of classic sf in hardcover for the first time. Gnome Press went under in 1962.
     In
1956,
Kyle chaired the 14th World Science Fiction Convention (NyCon II), inspiring the fan catchphrase, “Dave Kyle says you can’t sit here.” He was created a Knight of The Order of Saint Fantony in 1961, and was awarded the Big Heart Award in 1973. Kyle was also Fan Guest of Honor at ConStellation, the 41st World Science Fiction Convention, in 1983.
He wrote two pictorial histories of science fiction (A Pictorial History of Science Fiction and The Illustrated Book of Science Fiction Ideas and Dreams) and three licensed novels set in the Lensman universe (The Dragon Lensman, Lensman from Rigel, and Z-Lensman).

I last saw David at Readercon 2015 in Boston. He was admiring the ARC of MURDER DRAWS A CROWD by Fredric Brown. After a moment’s pause he looked up and said: “I used to play chess with him.”
     David Kyle
died at the age of 97 on September 18, 2016

Robert Weinberg (1942-2016)

Bob Weinberg, at one time or another, wore nearly every hat possible in science fiction: Author (novels, stories, comic books, and non-fiction), Editor, Publisher, Bookseller, Distributor, Collector, Art Dealer, Agent, and those are the ones that spring to mind.
I first knew of Bob as the author of THE WEIRD TALES STORY (Fax, 1977), a beautiful book chock of full of the history of Weird Tales magazine.
While Bob had sold the inventory and mailing list of his and Phyllis’ (his wife) mail-order business WEINBERG BOOKS, he still maintained a tight connection with publishers, dealers, and fellow art collectors. His collection (books, magazines, original artwork) was one of the finest in the world.

At my first PulpCon in 1997, I aggressively bid for all six issues of Bob‘s fanzine, THE WEIRD TALES COLLECTOR. Armed with this, I began my quest for a complete file of Edmond Hamilton’s stories (as payback, I invited Bob to write the introduction to the
first volume of Collected Hamilton, THE METAL GIANTS AND OTHERS in 2009).
One of my favorite memories of Bob was at PulpCon in 2004. The show was pretty much a bust for shopping until a new vendor set up right next to my table and began unboxing his wares. Well, a feeding frenzy broke out (this guy’s stuff was priced to MOVE!), and I spied Bob (bad legs and all) on all fours underneath this dealer‘s table a going through the merchandise. Lo and behold, he comes up for air holding a mint copy of Howard Browne’s A TASTE OF ASHES. Now, I had a copy of this, but not in jacket. IIRC, Bob snagged it for a mere $20. He immediately saw my disappointment. Hours later, the dealers’ room is closed and were all trooping to the hotel elevators. Bob and I cross paths and he says: “I’ll let you have the Browne book for $60.”  SOLD!
     Bob Weinberg
died at the age of 70 on September 25, 2016

I first encountered Barry Levin’s name via his classified advertisement in LOCUS magazine for BARRY R. LEVIN BOOKS in Santa Monica, California. In a pre-ebay era, Barry’s printed catalogues were full of wonders and rarities. When fortune smiled on me in 1996, I found myself with an all-expenses-paid three-day trip to San Francisco. With some finagling, I was able to stretch this into 3 days in SF and 5 days in Los Angeles for the same week as L.A. CON III, the 54th World Science Fiction Convention. While most business were shut for the Labor Day holiday, Barry’s store was open and we spent hours getting acquainted and looking over his inventory.
Barry was one of the first dealers to carry Haffner Press books, and I will never forget the day when he called placing an order. Suddenly, my little lark to make a book or two made that quantum leap from dream to reality.
My favorite “Barry-story” was his recalling his early days in bookselling and entertaining two local writers, Edmond Hamilton and Leigh Brackett. In the store, Barry had a copy of the Summer 1943 issue of CAPTAIN FUTURE. According Barry, Hamilton says that the artist (Earle K. Bergey) said: “You know, Ed, you have the face of a villain.” So, if you squint your eyes, you may imagine Hamilton pictured as the threatening bird-man. I’ll leave it to you if the defending woman isn’t a dead-ringer for a young Leigh Brackett.

Ed Gorman (1941-2016)

Ed Gorman was a writer’s writer. He wrote in nearly every genre (mystery, crime, horror, western, comics, etc.) except science fiction, but he was a sf-fan of the first strip going back to his teenage years. Ed and I exchanged many, many emails about our mutual love of late-50s science fiction adventures by Edmond Hamilton, Leigh Brackett, John Brunner, etc.
Additionally,
he edited over 20 anthologies and co-founded MYSTERY SCENE magazine Robert Randisi in 1985. For more than ten years he blogged about upcoming books at his site: http://newimprovedgorman.blogspot.com and it was always and honor when he gave Haffner Press a shout-out.
Ed Gorman wrote the introduction to our forthcoming omnibus, THE MICHAEL GRAY MYSTERIES by Henry Kuttner and Catherine L. Moore.

Recognitions:
Life Achievement Award from the Private Eye Writers of America
The International Horror Writers Award
Numerous nominations for the Edgar Award

Ed Gorman died on October 14, 2016 at the age of 74.

THE COMPLETE IVY FROST gets more guts!

The assembly of Donald Wandrei’s colossal 744-page collection of all 18 stories of sleuth IVY FROST and his partner Jean Moray (from the pages of CLUES DETECTIVE STORIES) passed another hurdle with the recent delivery of the interior art by Chris Kalb!Chris has re-purposed the original black and whitepulp illos for each story as double-page spreads opening each tale. They are simply fantastic!

The introduction by Wandrei expert D.H. Olson is in hand and all that remains is the last proofreaders pass on three remaining stories with a final touch-up on the magazine covers reproduced on the full-color endpapers.

Status on Fredric Brown Titles!

Not much news on the Fredric Brown front: As noted before, Volume One, MURDER DRAWS A CROWD was initially printed in December 2015, but the quality was so poor that we rejected the finished inventory and the printer refused to mount a second effort that would meet our (and your) expectations. Since then, we’ve been looking for a new printer whom we feel can get the job done.
Failry soon, we will be giving a different printer the job to make THE WATCHER AT THE DOOR: THE EARLY KUTTNER, VOLUME TWO. If all goes well, we will
send Vol. One and Vol. Two of the FREDRIC BROWN MYSTERY LIBRARY to this printer at the same time. Ideally, these Browns will be ready in the 4th quarter.  Meanwhile, follow[THIS LINK] to enjoy one of Brown’s very first stories: Blood of the Dragon” from Detective Yarns, February 1939
.

So . . . THE WATCHER AT THE DOOR is Off and Running

We’re happy to report that we’ve run out of things to do to make the second volume of Henry Kuttner’s early stories THE WATCHER AT THE DOOR ready for the bindery, so this 700+ page treasure is heading down the birthing process. The ambition is to release the book at the 2016 World Fantasy Convention in Columbus, Ohio in the last week of October.

(See the reminder above that this title is also available as part of a 3-book Combo.)

What’s MICHAEL GRAY Up To?

With the rigamarole in getting the Fredric Brown titles back on track, this omnibus of four 1950s mystery novels, THE MICHAEL GRAY MYSTERIES by Henry Kuttner and Catherine L. Moore, has been pushed down the publication list.We can report that aside from acquiring new cover art (the image at left is a placeholder; yeah, we know it says “Henry Kutter”…), we are in possession of the proofread manuscript, the Ed Gorman introduction, and the finished interior design.

We are soon to send out an offer to a new cover artist and hope to hear back some good news.

(See the reminder above that this title is also available as part of a 3-book Combo.)

Haffner Press Newsletter – Shipping Update & Brackett News! July 29, 2016

• Shipping Update on Recent Orders New Combo Offer for Leigh Brackett Titles
Lorelei of the Red Mist – SIGNED
Williamson Lectureship Book
Update on Retro Hugo Award status for Darker Than You Think” by Jack Williamson

Shipping Update on Recent Orders

A big thank you to all who partook of the Bump-n-Ding sale offered earlier this month. FYI, this offer will continue until all the buggered inventory has been depleted. In fact, the demand for single-copy orders exhausted our on-hand supply of single copy-sized shipping cartons (apologies to those of you who received a rather large box for a single book!) and we are now pleased to say that tomorrow will see the last of the outstanding orders shipped! <whew!>

New Leigh Brackett Combo!
In addition to containing “They,” a brand-new Leigh Brackett story, the contents of the LEIGH BRACKETT CENTENNIAL book continue to grow. So, it seems a natural to offer a combo of it, THE BOOK OF STARK, and our most recent Brackett title, SHANNACH—THE LAST: FAREWELL TO MARS. Ordering the combo will put you first in line as well as lock-in your total price for:

LEIGH BRACKETT CENTENNIAL is still being offered at $25, but with the addition of new content, the final price will certainly be higher. Wait until you see what we uncovered! (Keep Watching the Skies, indeed!)THE BOOK OF STARK is still holding at $45 and we hope to have news of who will be providing the introduction very soon (fingers-crossed!). As you may gather, this massive tome collects the fourEric John Stark” stories, the three novels of the “Skaith” series, and will be the first appearance of Brackett’s outline for a new Stark novel that she abandoned in 1977 to take on the screenwriting duties for the sequel to STAR WARS. The dustjacket and endpapers are provided by Raymond Swanland.SHANNACH—THE LAST: FAREWELL TO MARSis the third and final volume collecting all Brackett’s science fiction stories published in her lifetime. At nearly 600 pages, it’s a excellent addition to your library; many stories being reprinted for the first time and nearly as many appearing in their first hardcover appearance. The cover art is by Frank Kelly Freas and illustrated endpapers are by Ed Emshwiller. Grandmaster Anne McCaffrey provides the introduction.$110.00

LORELEI OF THE RED MIST – LTD ED.
by Leigh Brackett
Cover art by Frank Kelly Freas
Preface by Ray Bradbury
Introduction by
Harry Turtledoveley
496-page hardcover with custom chapbook
and matching slipcase

In sifting our inventory for bumped-n-dinged books, we uncovered a small quantity of the slipcased edition of LORELEI OF THE RED MIST(signed by the author of the introduction, Harry Turtledove, on a Frank Kelly Freas-illustrated limitation sheet) with slipcases! Better still: we also found surplus copies of the 70-page chapbook, BRACKETT TALES! Internally formatted to mimic the design of the original Planet Stories pulp magazine, BRACKETT TALES is chock full of vintage goodies:a facsimile reprint of “Lorelei of the Red Mist” from its first appearance in 1946, two rare fanzine works by Brackett (one short story and one essay), and correspondence between Brackett and Ray Bradbury from the early 40s through the 1970s. The 100-copy state of this edition sold out years ago—these copies will be marked “P/C” on the limitation sheet.$150.00

Finally, as you may have read elsewhere, the administrators of the 1941 Retro Hugo Awards have declared that “ ‘Darker Than You Think by Jack Williamson was mistakenly categorized as a novelette. The story is a novella, but did not receive enough nominations to be a finalist as a novella.  It has been marked as not eligible. The novelette “Vault of the Beast” by A. E. Van Vogt (Astounding Science-Fiction, August 1940) should have been listed as the 5th finalist and has been added to the Retro ballot.”

Well, that’s unhappy news. :(   However, we still want *you* to be happy so, as promised, we will continue tooffer THE WORLDS OF JACK WILLIAMSON (with the “novella”-length version of “Darker Than You Think”) for the discounted price of $35 until Labor Day:

LAST CALL for some of our Signed/Slipcased Editions

We took inventory last month and quantities are getting VERY LOW on our deluxe autographed editions. One of these is as low a ONE copy!  These editions are signed by the author of the book and/or the introducer (who is a recipient of a Grandmaster or Lifetime Achievement award—or both!), some of whom are no longer with us. Act soon if you’re considering the following:

Signed by Ramsey Campbell (introduction), Raymond Swanland (cover artist), Stephen Haffner (editor), and bears a Manly Wade Wellman autograph from a cancelled check. BONUS: ROMANCE IN BLACK: an exclusive chapbook of all five “Judge Pursuivant” stories illustrated by George Evans and a John Pelan introduction. $150

Signed by Hugh B. Cave (introduction) and Jon Arfstrom (cover artist). BONUS ITEMS: THREE FROM THE TOMB: an exclusive chapbook of three more “weird tales” with an introduction by Joe Wrzos. Tucked inside is a facsimile of the promo flyer announcing the adaptation of some of these stories for radio in the early 1930s. $100

Signed by Michael Moorcock (introduction). With the 1000-copy trade edition of this book long out of print (the lowest price we found today was $145 with “light musty odor”—Ha!), this is the best bang for your buck on this title (and our copies are still minty fresh!). $125

THE COLLECTED STORIES OF JACK WILLIAMSON

Signed by Grandmaster Jack Williamson. Out-of-print as well as the first-ever appearance of the original serialized version (“. . . And Searching Mind”) of the text that was rewritten as THE HUMANOIDS.    $150
Signed by Connie Willis (introduction), initialed by Ralph McQuarrie (cover artist) and bearing a mounted autograph of Jack Williamson. $150
Another case of the out-of-print trade editions commanding higher prices than these autographed editions.
Only ONE of these left. Signed by Frederik Pohl (foreword), James Gunn (introduction), Vincent Di Fate (cover artist), Vicky Medley (on her contribution “Queens of Space”) and Stephen Haffner (editor). BONUS: A chapbook of Williamson’s “Seetee” works (“Opposites—React!” and a sequence from his 1950s comic strip BEYOND MARS) introduced by William S. Higgins; and a copy of the chapbook THE MAN FROM SOMEWHERE signed by Jack Williamson. $150

Signed by Robert Silverberg (introduction) and Frederik Pohl (afterword). BONUS: an exclusive chapbook, OTHERNESSES, which includes three rare stories (including the “lost” Hogben story) and an introduction by Barry N. Malzberg (who has also signed the chapbook!). $150
